'Robbed him off me' - Steven Gerrard calls out Jamie Carragher over Gary Neville friendship

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has jokingly called out Jamie Carragher over his friendship with Gary Neville.

The pair played for the Reds together for 15 years, winning several major honours for the club including the Champions League and FA Cup.

Having both grown up on Merseyside and come through Liverpool’s Academy system, Gerrard and Carragher formed a close bond, both on and off the pitch.

However, the Aston Villa boss has accused Carragher of abandoning him to spend more time with his Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville.

When asked to name his most famous friend in a Q&A for Sky Sports , Gerrard replied: “Jamie Carragher - he’s flying. He’s smashing the punditry, was a top player, he’s on Gogglebox now.

“Everything that’s going, he’s doing so he’s probably my most famous friend now.

“Gary Neville’s new brother. People can’t get enough of him. He doesn’t even phone me anymore, doesn’t text me, nothing. I don’t even see him.

“Gary Neville’s robbed him off me! We used to be tight...he’s robbed him off me.

“Imagine Gary Neville robbing your mate! I’m going to have to improve my banter, aren’t I?”

Despite being part of the bitter rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool during their playing careers, Neville and Carragher have become two of the most renowned pundits in the sport through their work on Monday Night Football.

And Carragher wasn’t the only ex-Liverpool team-mate that Gerrard discussed during the interview.

Asked to name the best player he played with, the former Reds skipper listed Wayne Rooney as his most talented England team-mate - before sending a light-hearted message to Fernando Torres over his decision to leave Anfield.

“From a Liverpool point of view, it would probably be between Torres and Suarez,” the 41-year-old said.

“But if I was forced, because Luis done it over a longer period of time and Luis left for a foreign club rather than Chelsea, I’d go Luis Suarez.”
