Wrexham's Hollywood co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds were left heartbroken after watching the non-league side draw 3-3 with Sheffield United in the FA Cup on Sunday.
The National League leaders led the game going into the final moments and appeared to be on the verge of a historic giantkilling, before Blades defender John Egan poked home a winner just minutes from full-time.
After the game, Reynolds paid tribute to Wrexham fans and claimed the game was "one of the most exciting things" he's ever seen. His co-owner McElhenney, who wasn't at the game, issued a promise to Wrexham fans afterwards.
He quote-tweeted Reynolds' message with the proclamation: "We’re here now. We’re not going anywhere but up." McElhenney wasn't at the game, and was instead in Philadelphia watching his beloved Eagles secure a Super Bowl berth at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers.
Despite being on the other side of the pond, he still found a way to watch the game. McElhenney was interviewed by local television crews at a tailgating party and was watching the game alongside Eagles fans.
Wrexham now face a replay at Bramall Lane as they attempt to make it through to the fifth round of the FA Cup, all while navigating a promotion charge to the Football League.
Speaking before the game, however, Reynolds insisted he and McElhenney's dreams didn't end with an escape from non-league. He said: "In 10 years’ time the plan has and always will be the Premier League. If it’s theoretically possible to go from the fifth tier to the Premier League, why wouldn’t we try?
"Nobody has ever done anything great in this world thinking: ‘You know what, let’s go halfway’, so let’s go all the way and we believe we can do that. Call us crazy, but that's what we want to do.
Wrexham currently sit top of the National League, and are revelling in the added publicity brought about by their a-list owners. It was revealed on Friday that Wrexham had sold 24,000 replica shirts so far this season.
