Road where schoolboy, 16, hit by bus named in top ten most dangerous junctions in the area

The spot where a 16-year-old boy was hit by a bus last week was known to the council as being one of the most dangerous roads in the borough.

In a report published earlier this year it was revealed Green Lane, in Maghull, where it meets Shop Lane, was listed the 10th most dangerous junction in the region. Despite the council being aware of the dangers, due to a limited budget, only the top three roads would see the £100,000 earmarked for improvements.

The three worst roads and junctions in Sefton were listed as Crosby Road South/Cambridge Road, in Waterloo, Liverpool Road North/Southport Road, in Maghull, and The Northern Road in Crosby.

The most recent update from Merseyside Police revealed the boy who injured in the crash is still fighting for his life as of Thursday, September 8.

MP for Sefton Central Bill Esterson said: "I was very concerned to hear about the serious accident in Green Lane, Maghull, and I know Cllr June Burns was too. The fact that the air ambulance was called and the road closed for several hours shows just how bad the accident was and our thoughts are with the victim and his family.

"Sadly this is the second serious accident in less than a year. After the last accident, Cllr June Burns and I asked Sefton Council for a pedestrian crossing. Sefton Council included Green Lane in their crossing review last year. As you know, government cuts to council budgets mean there is very little money for new crossings and unfortunately, Green Lane did not qualify.

"Following this second serious accident we have asked the council to reconsider as we also know of a number of near misses at this spot. We will continue to press for a crossing and urge residents to let us know if they have any comments or questions about this or any other matters."

Last year a woman in her 70s was involved in a hit and run, with the pensioner being rushed to hospital on December 9 after the driver fled the scene of the crash.
