Road closures and travel advice as Cardiff's Principality Stadium set to host FIM Supercross Championships

The biggest stars of supercross are set to come to Cardiff in October as the city hosts the first ever World Supercross British Grand Prix. Supercross is an indoor dirt-bike racing sport and the event will take place at the Principality Stadium on Saturday, October 8.

The World Supercross Championship has historically taken place in the United States, however, this year events are taking place across the globe. The Principality Stadium will be transformed for the racing event, with 40 of the best riders battling it out for over US$250,000 in prize money. The stadium will be hosting the first round of the championship.

However, road closures are set to be in place for the event and there will be limited rail services on the day due to ongoing industrial action. Here's what you need to know about road closures, travel, and parking on the day.

Road Closures

  • From 2pm, Westgate Street, Wood Street and Lower St Mary Street will be closed to motor vehicles, with Wood Street re-opening at 10pm, but Lower St Mary Street remaining closed for the night-time economy.

  • With the gates of the Principality Stadium opening at 3.30pm for the event and the event scheduled to finish at 9pm, Wood Street, St Mary Street, Tudor Street and Despenser St (allowing access only) will be closed in its entirety between 2pm and 10pm.
  • Access to the Civic Centre will be controlled throughout the day, with access allowed only for event parking; limited commuter parking, loading and access to private car parks.
  • Roads affected include King Edward VII Avenue, Museum Avenue, City Hall Road, College Road and Gorsedd Gardens Road.

Trains

Cardiff Council has advised people not to travel by train on the day as the majority of Transport for Wales (TfW) services across the Wales and Borders network will be suspended due to the on-going national industrial action. While TfW is not involved in this industrial action, it will be unable to operate a number of rail services on Network Rail infrastructure as a result of the dispute between unions and Network Rail.

The only services operating will be on the Core Valley Lines in South Wales and a Cardiff to Newport shuttle, with one train operating hourly in each direction, between 7.30am and 6.30pm. No other TfW services across Wales and the Borders network will be able to operate.

Train services will operate between Cardiff Central and Rhymney, Treherbert, Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil in an hourly service in each direction between 7.30am and 6.30pm. There will be very limited road transport capacity between Radyr and Cardiff before 7.30am and after 6.30pm, when TfW is unable to operate trains via Llandaf and Cathays. For more information visit www.tfw.wales .

Bus

Bus services will be diverted while the city centre road closures are in place and customers are advised to visit the relevant bus operator's website for more information about your specific bus routes. National Express: National Express coaches will use Sophia Gardens as usual.
