Road ban for danger driver who drove into man on a pavement

A motorist who was convicted at trial of dangerous driving after ploughing his car into a man on a pavement has been banned from driving for 15 months.

Scott Greene, 23, seriously injured Mark Scott on October 25, 2019 when he ploughed his car into him.

Greene dangerously drove his car on Abbotsinch Road, Paisley, by failing to safely negotiate a bend, swerve on the road and mount a pavement.

Greene’s car collided with Mr Scott, causing him severe injury.

On the same date, Greene’s car had a tyre that didn’t meet legal roadworthy requirements.

Defence agent Mr Gallagher told Paisley Sheriff Court on Monday that this was “a very unfortunate incident that happened in isolation.”

He added: “He somewhat had a difficult upbringing.

“There was a tragic loss and he stepped in to look after his sibling and his mother.

“It was heard in evidence he had empathy towards the victim.

“And in the immediate aftermath he had been asking after the victim.

“This is a factor that’s played heavily in his
mind.

“Thankfully, and it was heard in evidence, the victim made a full recovery in a matter of months.

“This will be due to the good fortune and strength of character that Mr Scott was able to return to work and it was also heard that although he couldn’t walk as fast as he could before the accident, he is getting there.”

Sentencing, Sheriff Gillian Craig: “I do recall the facts of this trial.

“I know you blacked out and had no recollection and had a very tragic accident.

“Despite the number of tragedies in your life, you are a hard-working young man and you support your mother.

“I hope the incident doesn’t put you off course and I hope not to see you in the courts again.”

Sheriff Craig banned Greene, of Kilcreggan View, Greenock, from driving for 15 months, ordered him to carry out 100 hours unpaid work in the community within 18 months and fined him £60.

In addition, Greene was ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation at the rate of £200 per month.

Sheriff Craig added: “I hope this allows you to move on with your life.”
