Players of River Plate and players of Boca Juniors were involved in a scuffle during a Liga Profesional 2023 match at Estadio Mas Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti on May 7, 2023, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The rivalry between River Plate and Boca Juniors dates back to their founding years, with River Plate established in 1901 and Boca Juniors in 1905. The clubs first officially met in 1913, with River Plate emerging victorious in front of a crowd of 7,000 spectators.
Both clubs originated in the 'La Boca' neighborhood, with Boca Juniors still situated there amidst a mix of tourists and locals. Boca Juniors' blue and yellow kits were inspired by a Swedish ship that arrived in Rio de la Plata, with the Swedish flag influencing their colors. On the other hand, River Plate introduced a red sash on their white jerseys during Carnival in Buenos Aires, a design that has endured over a century.
