Rita Moreno's Dark Comedy Film The Prank Hits Theaters

Rita Moreno stars as a strict physics teacher in the dark comedy film The Prank.

In an unexpected departure from her previous roles, acclaimed actress Rita Moreno takes on the character of Mrs. Wheeler, a stern and mean-spirited physics teacher, in the dark comedy film, The Prank. The movie revolves around two students, Ben (Connor Kalopsis) and Tanner (Ramona Young), who set out to wreak havoc on their strict teacher's life by framing her for murder.

Directed by Maureen Bharoocha and written by Rebecca Flinn-White and Zak White, The Prank offers a thrilling and humorous storyline that promises to keep audiences entertained. The film showcases Rita Moreno's outstanding talent as she delivers a deliciously devilish performance, a departure from her previous iconic roles.

Maureen Bharoocha expresses her excitement for viewers to witness Moreno's unexpected portrayal in The Prank, emphasizing the combination of thrills and laughs the film offers. The director reflects on the privilege of working with the legendary EGOT winner, highlighting her unparalleled talent and energy.

The cast is rounded out by Keith David, Kate Flannery, and Meredith Salenger, who join Moreno, Kalopsis, and Young in bringing The Prank to life. The chemistry between the two student pranksters, Ben and Tanner, forms the core of the story. Ben is an overachiever, dedicated to his studies, while Tanner embodies a carefree, live-in-the-moment attitude. Despite their lack of popularity, their friendship provides solace and motivation.

The Prank's premise revolves around Mrs. Wheeler's demand for a confession from the student who cheated in her class, threatening to fail the entire group if no one comes forward. Igniting the elaborate plot, Ben and Tanner hatch a scheme to ruin their teacher's life and falsely accuse her of murder through social media.

The exclusive trailer offers a sneak peek into Moreno's portrayal of the coldest and strictest faculty member at Ben and Tanner's school. It showcases her deviousness as she nonchalantly delivers threats and maintains her innocence while rumors of her murderous intentions spread.

The trailer also hints at the moment where Ben and Tanner begin to realize the extent to which their prank has spiraled out of control, leaving them with a disconcerting dilemma.

Following its premiere in March 2022 at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, The Prank received critical acclaim for Moreno's outstanding performance. Moreover, the film earned two awards at the 2023 California Women's Film Festival.

In a November interview with PEOPLE, Moreno expressed her contentment in life, stating, 'I'm happy to be me.' Celebrating her 92nd birthday, the EGOT winner jokingly contemplated having two or possibly even three birthday parties. She also playfully acknowledged the challenges that come with getting older, admitting to becoming fussier and more insistent on being right.

Alongside her role in The Prank, Moreno has been active in the entertainment industry, with appearances in movies like 80 for Brady, Fast X and Family Switch, and on television shows such as Lopez vs. Lopez and Princess Power.

Fans eagerly anticipate the release of The Prank, which hits select theaters on March 15. Offering a unique blend of dark comedy, thrills, and Rita Moreno's captivating performance, the film promises to be a must-see for moviegoers seeking entertainment that pushes boundaries and surprises audiences.
