Risk of Rain Returns improves upon the classic roguelike game and changes some things to make it a new and exciting experience for players.

In this guide, we assist players in understanding the basics of the game. We also provide some tips and tricks to get them started. This article includes various advice on how you can stay alive and be efficient in your runs.

Play on Drizzle First

The game is relatively unforgiving and players will find it very easy to become overwhelmed by strong enemies. Fortunately, Risk of Rain Returns offers various difficulty settings that are useful for beginners.

Going down to the Drizzle difficulty first lets you get a grasp of the game and get comfortable moving around. It also gives you a chance to know the layout of the levels and recognize enemy attack patterns, according to IGN.

Adjust Damage Settings

You should also adjust your damage settings to let you focus more on collecting artifacts and learning the game. Risk of Rain Returns lets players increase their damage output by up to 200% and reduce damage taken by up to 10%.

Players can adjust these numbers however they like to get an easier or more challenging experience throughout their run. You should put them back to their default settings after you are comfortable enough to know what you're doing.

Jump When Fighting

In Risk of Rain Returns, your mobility is significantly hampered during fights and your movement when shooting is slowed down. It is recommended to instead take advantage of jumps whenever you are in battle, said GameRant.

You don't cancel your character's movement when you jump. This means that you can still move quickly while dodging enemy attacks and dealing damage. This also means that Hopoo Feathers are incredibly useful for all survivors excluding the Huntress.

Avoid Going Out of Bounds

You should avoid going out of bounds in Risk of Rain Returns because you will take damage every second. Players should look out for ribbons around certain Environments that mark the boundaries of the playable area.

If you go farther than these boundaries, you will start to receive damage every second until you return to the game's playable area, according to Rock Paper Shotgun.

Prioritize Getting Missiles

The hardest types of enemies to deal with in Risk of Rain Returns are flying foes that can be killed much more easily using missiles. These include the AtG Missile Mk. 1 and the Disposable Missile Launcher.

You can also get the Bundle of Fireworks and Ceremonial Dagger which are useful in filling your screen with target-seeking projectiles. Other options include Will-o-Wisp, Gasoline, Barbed Wire, and Tesla Coil which do passive damage to flying enemies.
