Rising sulphur prices put fertiliser sector under pressure, threaten higher subsidy burden

The rising sulphur price is proving to be a pressure point for India’s fertiliser sector, raising the production costs of diammonium phosphate (DAP), single super phosphate (SSP), and complex fertilisers, which may increase the government’s subsidy burden if prices stay high.

Landed sulphur prices in India have doubled since January to around $900-1,100 per tonne, according to industry estimates. The surge has been driven by disruptions and uncertainty around oil refining and natural gas processing infrastructure amid the West Asia and Russia-Ukraine conflicts, as well as higher shipping and logistical risks.
