Rising star's AFL link helping spur Super finals glory

When star defender Jessie Grenvold is looking for some finals experience to help the Melbourne Mavericks continue their historic Super Netball run, she doesn't have to look far.

In fact, all she has to do is have a chat with her father, 1993 AFL premiership winner David Grenvold.

"He likes to joke that he's my own personal coach, (which is) unbeknownst to me," Jessie told AAP of the fomer Essendon star.

"He is very good at reassuring me so that I just stick to the process ... He doesn't let me get carried away with all the bells and the whistles, the what ifs, and what might happen.

"Obviously the fundamental game is very different, but I think the fundamentals of any team sport can be very similar."

Grenvold will make her competition finals debut after joining the Mavericks ahead of their inaugural season in 2024, and will play against the West Coast Fever in a do-or-die minor semi-final on Sunday.

The 23-year-old has been a huge part of helping Melbourne achieve their historic first finals campaign after she parachuted into a starting defence role when Tara Hinchliffe sustained a knee injury mid-season.

Her game-changing and courageous plays have resulted in her receiving a maiden call-up for the Diamonds squad.

"I was so surprised. I did not see that (Diamonds) phone call coming at all, so much so that I missed the phone call twice," she said.

"I was actually filming the Mavs podcast I hosted with (teammate) Reilley Batcheldor, and we were just in the middle of an episode."

The Adelaide Thunderbirds' Latanya Wilson is preparing to face the Melbourne Vixens in the major semi-final, also on Sunday, with the winner qualifying for the grand final, and the loser to take on the winner of the minor semi-final.

Wilson believes that securing the title this season would be extra special, especially after fellow star defender Shamera Sterling-Humphrey returned from giving birth last October.

"Growing up, Shamera was always my idol, so I'm always inspired by her, just how she goes about her business and gets the job done," Wilson told AAP.

"For her to be going through her postpartum depression … and for her to be so vulnerable in terms of allowing the world to come inside (her life) ... it takes supernatural power."

The Thunderbirds won't play the grand final qualifier at their usual home arena of the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, instead playing at the lower-capacity Adelaide 36ers Arena because of a scheduling clash, something Wilson labelled as "disappointing".

However, the chief executive of the venue's operator Martin Radcliffe said the clash happened because the Super Netball season was moved forward to account for the Commonwealth Games.
