
A woman travel blogger and her Brazilian partner were victims of a horrific assault in eastern Jharkhand state’s Dumka district in India. The couple, who were documenting their journey on Instagram, were camping when seven men attacked them. The woman reported being raped and assaulted, leading to the arrest of three suspects with four more being sought by the police.
India has been grappling with a surge in sexual violence against women, with 31,516 rape cases reported in 2022 alone. However, the actual number is believed to be much higher due to underreporting and societal stigma. Women's rights activists highlight the challenges faced by victims, especially in rural areas where reporting such crimes can lead to further victimization.
