Rishi Sunak will struggle to match strong support from MPs among Tory members, poll finds

Rishi Sunak could struggle to win the support of Tory party members if he faces any of Liz Truss, Penny Mordaunt or Kemi Badenoch in a run-off vote, according to a new poll.

As Tory MPs trooped into a committee room in the House of Commons for the fourth round of voting the survey gave a boost to Truss who is currently trailing in third.

According to the poll, Penny Mordaunt’s strong lead from last week’s members poll has fallen and she now narrowly loses to both Truss and Kemi Badenoch

The YouGov members poll was conducted on Monday and Tuesday after the second of the two TV debates as there was frantic horse trading for the support of MPs who backed Tom Tugendhat, the candidate who dropped out.

In the poll of Tory members Truss beats Sunak outright by 53 per cent to 35 per cent and beats Mordaunt by 48 per cent to 42 per cent.

The poll makes bad reading for Sunak who loses outright to Mourdant and Badenoch too in a run off, with his highest support being 37 per cent.

Mordaunt would lose to Truss 42 per cent to 48 per cent and loses to Badenoch 43 per cent to 48 per cent.

The result of the fourth round of voting, on the hottest day of the year, is due at 3pm.

Sunak is in currently in the lead with 115 votes and Mourdant on 82 votes.

Liz Truss was 11 behind on 71 votes but closing the gap on her Trade Minister rival to take on Sunak in the run-off vote of party members.

Kemi Badenoch scored 58 votes and Tugendhat dropped out with 31 votes.
