Rishi Sunak refused to rule out cutting benefit payments to fund a tax cut before the next election, despite experts warning the move would be “morally bankrupt and economically illiterate”.
The prime minister declined to “speculate” about what will be in chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s Budget in November when asked if he could guarantee benefits will rise with inflation.
