Rishi Sunak urged to press ahead with crackdown on West End pedicabs

Rishi Sunak was on Tuesday urged to ensure a serious crackdown on rip-off pedicabs goes ahead later this year.

Westminster Council said its inspectors are attempting to protect tourists in the West End from being charged extortionate fares, with "one hand tied behind their backs".

Under current laws the town hall can only prosecute the rickshaw drivers on noise and nuisance charges but are unable to stop drivers charging astronomical prices.

Cllr Aicha Less, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for public protection, said: “It’s clear that the government have been freewheeling when it comes to providing proper legislation on pedicabs.

“Anyone who goes out in the West End can see how real the issue is, our city inspectors are trying to combat pedicabs with one hand tied behind their backs.

“We’ll continue to enforce what powers we have to take these rip-off rickshaws off the streets, but we need a Transport Bill in November with clearly defined legislation that gives more power to us and TfL.”

Tourists have reported being forced to pay up to £500 for a 10-minute ride in the colourful vehicles that blast out music.

Three drivers were ordered to pay a total of £2,765 last month for causing a public nuisance.  Westminster council has so far fined pedicab owners almost £35,000.

Downing Street has hinted that new legislation on pedicabs will be outlined in November, when the Prime Minister’s priorities are set out in the King’s Speech.
