Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid resign from UK Government in Boris Johnson protest

Chancellor Rishi Sunak and health secretary Sajid Javid have both resigned from the UK Government, throwing Boris Johnson's political future into doubt.

The two made the announcement within moments of each other, suggesting the move was pre-planned in an effort to remove Johnson from power. The Prime Minister has faced significant backlash over his handling of the Chris Pincher saga.

As reported by Edinburgh Live, their simultaneous departure could potentially spell the end of Johnson's term as Prime Minister. He has faced anger from both his own party and the public after it was revealed that he was informed of a complaint made against Mr Pincher in 2019.

While No 10 initially claimed he was not aware, it later admitted that he knew of the complaint but had forgotten about it.

In a letter shared on Twitter, Javid stated: "Given the unprecedented scale of the challenges in health and social care, it has been my instinct to continue focusing on this important work.

"So it is with most enormous regret that I must tell you that I can no longer, in good conscience, continue serving in this government."

He commented that the UK public "rightly expect integrity" from its government, continuing: "The tone you set as leader, and the values you represent, reflect on your colleagues, your party and ultimately the country."

In a further attack on the Prime Minister's conduct, the now-former health secretary added: "The vote of confidence last month showed that a large number of our colleagues agree. It was a moment for humility, grip and new direction.

"I regret to say, however, that it is clear to me that this situation will not change under your leadership - and you have therefore lost my confidence too."

Just moments later, Sunak shared his own letter of resignation. The Chancellor stated that departing was not a decision that he made lightly, with the UK struggling with the worsening cost of living crisis.

He said: "However, the public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously.

"I recognise this may be my last ministerial job, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning."

Sunak added: "I am sad to be leaving Government but I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that we cannot continue like this."
