Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt top Tory leadership ballot after second round of voting

Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt have maintained their places at the front of the Tory leadership race after Suella Braverman was eliminated.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss came in third but will hope to pick up votes from right winger Braverman’s supporters in the next round.

Six contenders to replace Boris Johnson as Tory leader and Prime Minister were in the running for this afternoon's ballot.

Sunak picked up 101 votes, Mordaunt 83, Truss came third on 64, Kemi Badenoch trailed on 49 and Tom Tugendhat picked up 32.

Braverman was elimiated after winning 27 votes, five fewer than she had in Wednesday’s first round of the contest despite the field being smaller on Thursday.

This process will continue until two candidates are left, after which Tory members will pick a winner.
