RISC launched world’s first “Well-Being Design & Engineering” program

Research & Innovation for Sustainability Center (RISC), founded by MQDC, a leading upscale real estate developer with a passion for well-being focused development, is introducing its inaugural and the world’s first “Well-Being Design & Engineering Program”.

The program is designed to teach research-based interdisciplinary insights for design and construction that promote well-being for humans, local flora and fauna, and the overall environment. Fields of knowledge incorporated into the program range from psychology and understandings to system engineering and holistic management.

“Well-being is beyond being ‘happy’,” explains Assoc. Prof. Dr. Singh Intrachooto, Chief Advisor at RISC. “It entails far more than merely emotional aspects and it’s not just about meeting functional needs, because a good building or a good city should be good for both people and the environment.”

“There are different dimensions to well-being but they’re not currently fully integrated in buildings,” he continues. “So, we need a conductor, someone who can clearly see the overall picture and apply a comprehensive approach to well-being.”

“Well-Being Design & Engineering is the future. One day we will need to have a Well-Being Design & Engineering major or faculty. Because well-being will only become more important. But right now, we lack these professional practitioners.”

He stressed that the work should be research-driven and based on actual experience.

“Our program features experts from various fields with different perspectives to make up Well-Being Design & Engineering. We use the term ‘engineering’ instead of ‘design’ to emphasise that it’s not tacit or intuitive work. We want to offer quantifiable results that key decision makers can easily understand and adapt these measurements.”

Well-Being Design & Engineering Program breaks down into topics of mental well-being, physical well-being, environmental well-being, and resilience frameworks for future development. Well-being field trips and on-site experiences are integrated with MQDC projects, a full-day biodiversity survey, a brain lab experience, and a well-being product design innovation laboratory.

Up to 20 experts and 20 candidates from the general public are invited to join this course for free-of-charge. Participants will include deans from engineering and architecture faculties, executives in the real estate sector, and leaders in the property sector.

“We need people who can effect real change, implement better standards for society, or make an impact in the academic dimension because, as I mentioned, we want to see quantifiable change,” Dr. Singh concluded.

The free-of-charge classes will take place every Friday over nine weeks, starting February 2023.

“Well-Being Design & Engineering Program” is open for applications until 20 January 2023.
