Rio Ferdinand outlines how Erik ten Hag has improved Manchester United this season

Former centre-back Rio Ferdinand believes implementing stability has been the key to Manchester United's resurrection under manager Erik ten Hag this season.

Approaching his first anniversary as United manager, Ten Hag has restored standards at Old Trafford in his maiden campaign at the helm, with the club on course to finish inside the top four and secure Champions League qualification for next season. They are currently third in the standings following Sunday's 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

As well as being on course to qualify for Europe's premier club competition, Ten Hag also ended the club's six-year wait for a trophy, guiding them to the Carabao Cup crown back in February, beating Newcastle United 2-0 in the final. They are also still alive and kicking in both the Europa League and the FA Cup, meaning it is possible United could end the season by winning three major honours and securing a top-four berth.

Although United remain a work-in-progress and do need to strengthen their squad again in the summer, they have enjoyed a very encouraging first season under the Dutchman, who has restored pride and given the club an identity again. And it is that ability to have restored standards that has been a major factor in such a successful maiden campaign, according to former Reds ace Ferdinand.

Asked what Ten Hag has brought to Old Trafford this term, Ferdinand, speaking on his Vibe with Five podcast, said: "Stability. Simple as. He has brought a bit of stability and brought a bit of pride back into the building. He has also brought direction and a little bit of discipline."

Ten Hag, who will be determined to see his side advance to the semi-finals of the Europa League when they face Sevilla in the second-leg of their quarter-final showdown in Spain on Thursday evening, is a firm believer of discipline and high standards being in place. He has made it clear throughout his reign that he will not accept anything less the very best and 100 per cent commitment.
