Rio Ferdinand outlines differences between himself and Kalvin Phillips as Manchester United transfer links continue

There has been speculation about Kalvin Phillips' future ever since he shot to England stardom last summer, as he played every minute of England's run to runners-up in the delayed Euro 2020 tournament. The Leeds academy product has made clear that his intentions are to stay at Elland Road, but that hasn't stopped continued rumours about his future and he would almost certainly leave were the worst to happen on the Premier League's final day and Leeds drop back into the Championship.

One team which has been strongly linked to the midfielder is Leeds' arch-rivals Manchester United. However, one man who has made the move from Leeds to the red side of Manchester, Rio Ferdinand, is certain that Phillips will not follow in his foot-steps.

Speaking on his Vibe with Five podcast, Ferdinand said: "Kalvin Phillips don’t go to Man United. This is the difference between me and him, he’s a Leeds boy. He can’t set foot back in Leeds, his family have to move out, if he goes to Man United. Trust me."

"I had the head of Yorkshire police ring me when I left for Man United and said, ‘don’t come back for a while’ and I was only there for 18 months. Kalvin is a top player, he ain’t going to Man United. f Kalvin Phillips goes to Man United, boy, he’s a brave man.”

Should Leeds secure their top flight status for another season on Sunday, they will certainly look to tie down Phillips to a new contract. If they are relegated, Leeds fans will have to get used to the idea of him playing elsewhere but it seems extremely unlikely that he will ever wear the red shirt of Manchester United, as Ferdinand did to such success.
