Rio Ferdinand names pros and cons of Manchester United signing Casemiro

Rio Ferdinand has outlined the positives and negatives of Casemiro's move to Manchester United.

United announced on Friday that they had come to an agreement with Real Madrid over a move for the Brazilian midfielder. MEN Sport understands that the contract Casemiro will sign is heavily performance-related and will improve further should the Reds qualify for the Champions League.

The contract is four years in length but there is the option of an additional year should United wish to trigger it. Following the announcement of the deal, Ferdinand took to his Vibe with Five YouTube channel to discuss the Brazilian's imminent arrival.

"Everyone is asking what my view is and what I think," the former centre-back began. "Do you know what? That is the kind of player Man United need. He is the type of character they need more than anything. The type of person. Is he over-priced? Yes.

"First and foremost, the guy is a winner, he knows how to win. He has been integral to everything positive about Real Madrid in recent years.

"He has been one of the main guys alongside the likes of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Karim Benzema, Cristiano [Ronaldo] before that, [Sergio] Ramos, [Raphael] Varane. When the big games come along this guy performs, he knows what he is doing.

"There are no thrills with him. He ain't a step-over merchant, he ain't a skills-man, he ain't somebody who wants to get the fans off their seats.

"He is there to do a job that means that the team are better off and the team has a chance of winning. He is first and foremost a team football player which I love about him.

"If something needs sorting out on the pitch, he is the man you want right by your side. Tactically where I think Manchester United are very, very, very loose in recent years is when there is transitions - he could be very important."

However, despite Ferdinand seeing plenty of positives to the Casemiro deal, he did see there being a few negatives as well. "Are there negatives? Yes there are.

"His age. 30-years-old is not a massive negative but from a business standpoint there is going to be zero re-sale value.

"It is currently £60m with £10m add-ons, couple that with wages and you are looking at say £100m. In a time when we don't have the finances, it doesn't seem, to bring in the big, big players we have put it all into him, so it needs to work."
