Rio Ferdinand makes Liverpool Champions League call with Newcastle in position to add to woes

Rio Ferdinand believes Liverpool supporters are on the brink of missing out on the top four. A heavy defeat to Manchester City hammered another nail into their Champions League coffin.

Despite taking the lead, it did not take long for Pep Guardiola’s free-flowing side to turn the game on its head - eventually trouncing the Reds 4-1. The loss left Liverpool five points behind Newcastle United, with Eddie Howe and Co also boasting a game in hand.

Their next two fixtures are against Chelsea on the road before taking on Arsenal at Anfield. Inconsistency has plagued Liverpool’s season and they are in danger of missing out on the Champions League spot for the first time since 2016.

Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand thinks Reds fans should be “worried” about their top-four hopes. He told BT Sport: “They (Liverpool) seem to have lost that mojo. It’s hard to put a finger on exactly why, we looked at the midfield before the game and every single City midfielder gets in the team.

“That’s an element of concern for Liverpool they’ll address in the summer but I’d be fearful if I was a Liverpool fan about the top four. There are teams around them, with games in hand, that are more consistent and seem like they’ve got a bit of an edge on them now. It’s worrying times for Klopp and his team.”

Co-pundit Joleon Lescott agreed, highlighting the unlikely situation that Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur will fall off a cliff. He added: “I think there are too many variables now for Liverpool that they need to finish in the top four.

“I think there are too many teams in good form playing exciting football, confidence a lot higher than Liverpool’s, who are relying on other results. If it was down to them solely they have the capabilities of winning the games but, in regards to needing other teams to lose and drop points, I don’t see that happening.”
