Rio Ferdinand has rejected the idea of Newcastle United replacing Eddie Howe with Thomas Tuchel. New Chelsea chief Todd Boehly surprisingly wielded the axe on the German after an underwhelming 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday.
Despite winning the Champions League less than 18 months ago, Tuchel has been relieved of his duties and the Blues are now searching for their tenth manager in as many years. The move comes just six games into the Premier League season and after Chelsea spent almost £300million on new arrivals.
Brighton have allowed Graham Potter - who has a £16million buyout clause - to speak to the London club. Toon supporters were relieved on social media as it meant Howe, the other highly-rated English manager in the division, is staying put.

The 44-year-old has revitalised Newcastle’s fortunes since his appointment last November. BetVictor price Howe at 33/1, making him a longshot for the vacant role.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand dismissed suggestions of Howe joining Chelsea. When asked whether Magpies chiefs view their manager as a “stepping stone” and could be swayed to appoint a high-profile boss like Tuchel, the former Manchester United defender cited the project taking place at St James’ Park.
“I think their (Newcastle owners) project and process is in play,” Ferdinand said. “They’re meticulous and methodical with that and I don't think they're a group that will be panicked into judging a situation.
“And Eddie Howe, you can see at the moment the club is going like that (upwards) under his guidance. For that reason, I don't think right now will be the time.
“I also don't think Newcastle are in a position for Thomas Tuchel (to come in). Chelsea are on a different level to Newcastle right now, with all due respect. I'm not saying it's a project he wouldn't be interested in but I feel Newcastle will probably say ‘we're happy where we are, this isn't the right time for us’.”
