It’s been seven years since Rihanna released music. Yes, you read that right — seven. Apart from the odd glimmer of hope (most recently on the Black Panther soundtrack’s lead single Lift Me Up) fans had pretty much given up on the idea that the business mogul would ever return to music. So, understandably, when it was announced that Rihanna would be performing in the coveted Super Bowl halftime show spot, the internet went into a frenzy.
Although the Anti singer was previously approached to do the halftime show for Super Bowl 2019, she turned it down due to the NFL controversy surrounding Colin Kaepernick. However, during a red carpet interview for her recent Savage x Fenty Vol. 4 fashion show, she explained her decision to finally accept the prestigious gig. “Nothing would have gotten me out of the house if it wasn’t a challenge like that,” she said of the upcoming performance. “You could get real comfortable being at home as a mom, [so this is] challenging myself to do something that I’ve never done before in my career. I have to live up to that challenge.”
To commemorate the historical moment, the Grammy award winning musician has dropped a limited edition football-inspired collection for her lingerie line Savage x Fenty. Most notably among the 17 pieces is a white t-shirt with the slogan, "Rihanna concert interrupted by a football game, weird but whatever.” As well as a hoodie featuring the photo of her tattooed hand holding a football that she used to announce the halftime show performance.
Modelled by the beauty boss herself, the “Game Day” line will also include varsity jerseys, sweatpants, boxers, tube tops and bandanas, and come in a wide range of sizes starting from XXS and going up to 4X. Prices start from £20 and are already selling out fast — so don’t wait on the sidelines.
But don’t be thinking that, because there’s a new drop of clothes and a long awaited concert taking place in just five weeks, that a new album is on the horizon. “No, no, no. That’s not true,” says Rihanna. “Super Bowl is one thing. New music is another thing. Do you hear that, fans? Because I knew, the second that I announced this I said, ‘Oh my God, they’re gonna think my album is coming, I need to get to work.’”
