Ridiculously long road starts in Wallasey and ends 109 miles away near famous landmark

A road used by people every day in Merseyside ends 109 miles away near an ancient monument.

The A59 starts in Wallasey and passes through three counties and several major motorways. Sections of the road date back to the Middle Ages, while other parts follow the routes of Victorian roads.

Much of the A59 in Merseyside is largely unchanged from the past century. In fact, road infrastructure from the Victorian era is still used from Liverpool to Switch Island, with only the junction to Aughton via Maghull added in the 20th century.

After beginning in Wallasey, at the tip of the M53 motorway, the road leads through the Kingsway Tunnel. Upon entering Liverpool, it joins Scotland Road in Vauxhall and continues north through Kirkdale, Walton and Aintree before hitting Switch Island.

Passing through Maghull and Lydiate, the A59 extends into Lancashire and North Yorkshire running along the Fewston Reservoir. It then picks up a Roman road towards the spa town of Harrogate.

The road then descends into York, before finally ending just to the south of the renowned city walls, originally built in 71 AD. Today the walls are a scheduled ancient monument and a grade I listed building.
