Danny Murphy said it was a ‘ridiculous decision’ to deny Allan Saint-Maximin a penalty that could have doubled Newcastle’s win over Leeds.
Newcastle United had the chance to double their lead late in the second-half when Leeds United’s Robin Koch kicked Allan Saint-Maximin ’s feet away in the penalty area.
However, the referee chose not to award the spot-kick and instead Saint-Maximin was left lying on the ground looking perplexed, though the Magpies did manage to hold on to their 1-0 win.
Speaking on Match of the Day, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy said: “This is a penalty. I don’t know how he’s missed it.
“Thankfully for Newcastle it wasn’t relevant to the final score, but you see the touch there and they’ve missed it.
“I can’t really give you any explanation. It’s just one of those ridiculous decisions.”

Also speaking on the programme, Alan Shearer highlighted the work of Kieran Trippier, who he tipped as a future Newcastle captain. The pundits then discussed Leeds’ lack of a centre-forward.
Shearer said: “There’s no doubt about it, obviously they’re missing [Patrick] Bamford.”
Looking through some replays, Shearer added: “They missed that presence in and around the six-yard box, just to get that scruffy little goal. There’s no-one there in that killer position where someone should be who’s going to put the ball into the back of the net.”
He later added: “They opened Newcastle up at times into very good positions, but they didn’t make the most of it at all.”
Newcastle now head to Saudi Arabia for a mid-season break.
