Seahawks fans got pretty much the full Geno Smith experience in yesterday’s win over the Commanders. In the first half Smith played about as poorly as he ever has for Seattle, ending the second quarter with a brainfart of a grounding penalty that resulted in a runoff and a wasted opportunity for the Seahawks offense.
Whatever Smith did in the locker room at halftime, it worked. When it mattered most Smith turned his game up a few levels, putting in a super-clutch performance on the team’s last two drives of the game. Geno went 9/10 for 100 yards, one touchdown and just enough production to put Jason Myers in position to win the game with his fifth field goal.
After it was over, a lot of Smith’s harshest critics were nowhere to be found on social media – despite Drew Lock’s name trending again only a couple of hours earlier. Richard Sherman for one was impressed by Smith’s finish, saying that this is what he can do when he is protected properly.

Collectively, the offensive line did a much better job of keeping Smith clean than they did against Cleveland or Baltimore. In the end, Smith was only sacked once and hit five times.
If right tackle Abe Lucas actually returns this week as expected, it should provide a huge boost for a unit that’s been sorely missing him.
