Richard Madeley mocks 'shouty' guest who says avoiding housework should be a crime

Richard Madeley clashed with a doctor on Tuesday's Good Morning Britain as they discussed housework.

Richard was hosting the ITV breakfast show alongside Ranvir Singh when the conversation soon turned to domestic chores.

"Apparently 90 per cent of couples spend up to an hour arguing about household chores," Ranvir began.

"The question this morning is: Do you always feel like you're always responsible for the chores at home?

"We're asking because there's a proposal in France to make it a criminal offence to shirk domestic chores," Ranvir continued.

She was referring to the proposal by feminist Sandrine Rousseau who says that a law is necessary as we've barely progressed since the 1970's.

Richard and Ranvir invited Dr Tessa Dunlop and Aggie MacKenzie into the studio to debate the topic, but it wasn't long before Richard was mocking one of them.

Laughing as he introduced Dr Dunlop, she quickly fired back: "Well may Richard laugh, but will you be wielding a mop?"

"I do my share, I'm not gonna go to detail," Richard replied, referring to his own efforts when it comes to household chores.

"I'm sorry let's cut to the chase here, we're talking about it being a criminal offence, this is nonsense, absolute nonsense, to drag a man or a woman into court for not doing the washing up," Richard continued.

Hitting back, Dr Dunlop argued: "Let's flip the argument on its head... we enshrined in law the idea of equal pay before I was even born, in 1970. And we still haven't achieved equal pay, women are still paid about 10 per cent less for doing the same job despite all our best efforts.

"All the research says until you have equality in the domestic space, until men are doing their fair share of unpaid work in the domestic space you will not get equality," she added.

"That's a false analogy!" Richard responded. "Can you imagine going down to the nick, being arrested and being at the police station... what would the charge be?!"

Dr Dunlop continued to compare it to women not receiving equal pay, but Richard was having none of it.

"You keep making parallels... joking aside... set aside the parallels, just stick to this one. Really, can you see a man in the dock on the accusation of not doing the washing up? Can you see that actually unfolding?"

"Yeah, I can actually because there's been precedence..." Dr Dunlop replied as Richard started laughing.

GMB viewers clearly thought her argument was absurd too and took to Twitter to comment.

"This shouty woman on #GMB is the reason why people don’t take women seriously," one person posted.

Another tweeted: "#GMB is this lady serious?? making avoiding housework a crime?? FFS!"

Someone else said: "Stereotyping all men because she has a lazy husband. If that was a man doing it about a women would cause hell. #GMB #goodmorningbritain."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV and ITV Hub.
