Richard Madeley fumes at Matt Hancock over 'pivoting' admission on I'm A Celebrity

Richard Madeley called out I'm A Celebrity 2022 's Matt Hancock on Monday morning, as he spoke on Good Morning Britain about the disgraced Tory MP's recent government admission.

Hancock openly confessed on I'm A Celebrity last week that politicians, including himself, deliberately swerve questions in interviews and press conferences - calling it "pivoting".

The former Health Secretary also offered an insight into how political figures ignore the given question, giving examples of what they might say to change the direction of the questioning to suit them.

Richard and co-host Susanna Reid brought up the confession on GMB, and recalled times where Hancock has actually "pivoted" during their interviews.

From moments with former host Piers Morgan, to some of Hancock's last live TV interviews before his resignation last year, Susanna and Richard analysed the moments he was asked something, only for him to answer something else.

Richard then called out Hancock on the show, disagreeing with the idea of the strategy being "admirable", and suggesting he and other political figures deliberately "fill time" in interviews.

He commented, while talking to the camera at viewers: "Admirable... what he's saying is this is how we dodge your questions. And it's not just our questions, because we ask the questions on behalf of you.

"So they are actually dodging your questions. What their prime and tested strategy is, is they give you an answer to a question you haven't asked."

Susanna went on: "He even admitted that! So we have gone back through our Matt Hancock interviews and found out where he may have performed the pivot."

After the clips aired, Richard slammed: "Pivot, pivot, pivot, pivot," before he recalled his interview with another government minister, Gavin Williamson, where his questions were not answered - leading to him ending the interview.

Susanna then said: "As you say Richard, the point of it is these questions are asked by us on behalf of the voters, and if he is out and out saying that's a deliberate strategy, that he claims that it is admirable..."

Richard added: "They also know these are live interviews and time is constrained, so they're filling time and hoping to get to the end of the time that we've got."

Hancock had said to his campmates about the gesture last week: "Firstly practice and prep. I've got like 20 years of answering the question I want to answer, not the one that is given right.

"Blair used the word 'look' right if people would ask a difficult question. He would say 'Look what I came here to talk about was my marvellous programme' and such and such.

"I mean, in politics it is called the pivot. And so you have to give enough link to the question that it doesn't look like you're avoiding the question. Whilst pivoting and a good pivot is admirable."

As Seann asked: "So can politicians literally watch an interview sometimes and see a pivot and be like, 'good pivot'?" Hancock nodded and said yes.

Seann said afterward: "I've never seen a politician talk about how they dodged the bullets. And he was there just going 'look, this is how we do it'."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV and ITV Hub.
