Richard Johnson named new Middlesex head coach after leaving Surrey

Middlesex have announced that Surrey assistant Richard Johnson is to become their new head coach, following the departure of Stuart Law.

Law was sacked in October last year after another disappointing campaign in which Middlesex finished second in Division Three of the County Championship’s temporary conference structure, akin to 14th of the 18 first-class sides.

Johnson, who enjoyed two successful spell at Middlesex as a player, had previously been on the coaching staff at Lord’s before moving to Surrey in 2019 but will now cross the capital divide for a second time.

The 46-year-old became a bowling coach at Middlesex in 2011 and was assistant to Richard Scott during the 2016 title winning season, before briefly standing in as interim head coach after Scott’s departure midway through the 2018 season.

“I feel incredibly honoured to be given the chance to be the First Team Coach of this amazing club,” Johnson said. “It is a place that I hold extremely close to my heart, having been associated with the Club since I was ten years old.

“The opportunity to return and give my all in trying to make Middlesex successful again is one that not only excites me but makes me incredibly proud.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Surrey, and especially Alec Stewart for the past three years. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and wish the players and the Club all the very best for the future.”
