Richard Hammond thanks emergency workers on 20th anniversary of Top Gear crash

  • Television presenter Richard Hammond has marked the 20th anniversary of his near-fatal 2006 Top Gear crash by sharing a candid social media post reflecting on the moment he felt convinced he was going to die.
  • The accident occurred in September 2006 when a jet-powered dragster Hammond was driving at more than 300mph veered off a track and overturned, resulting in him being airlifted to hospital and placed in a deep coma.
  • Hammond expressed profound gratitude to the emergency services workers, doctors, and healthcare staff who rescued and treated him, acknowledging that his career and family life were only possible due to their efforts.
  • Despite returning to present Top Gear alongside Jeremy Clarkson and James May just four months after the crash, Hammond has since revealed that the accident caused long-term health impacts, including ongoing memory issues.
  • The anniversary comes as the BBC recently announced that Top Gear will return next year with a new presenting line-up, following a hiatus caused by another serious crash involving presenter Freddie Flintoff in 2022.
