Richard E. Grant's maximalist Christmas tree makes a case for over-indulgent festive decor – it's easy to recreate with bright lights and colorful ornaments

Richard E. Grant.

There is perhaps no better Christmas ritual than decorating the tree while Love Actually plays in the background. It's no surprise, then, that the creator of one of the most beloved, modern Christmas movies, pulls out all the stops for his own tree.

Grant's Christmas tree, which he shared a snap of on his Instagram page, is a maximalist wonder, with white lights, colorful baubles, and textured ornaments lining the branches. Grant cheekily dubbed it 'our minimalist tree' in the caption, but maximalist trees are a classic for a reason.

We love how customizable and eclectic maximalist trees can be; heirloom ornaments can be placed alongside luxe baubles, while white lights serve as a neutral base to decorate around. We recommend mixing and matching different colors, textures, and sizes of ornaments and baubles to maintain visual appeal. Additionally, for the adventurous holiday decorators, an unorthodox tree color, like ice blue or hot pink, can be a great way to spice things up.

'In observing celebrity Christmas decorations this year, I have noticed an increasing number of figures opting for an uber-minimalist, 'nearly-naked' tree – often comprising nothing but lights. Richard E Grant's maximalist Christmas tree is the opposite of this,' comments Megan Slack, the head of celebrity news at Homes & Gardens.

'While I may have been convinced that we were seeing maximalism's popularity waver, the actor has reminded us that more really is more – and if we can't be playful and overly indulgent at Christmas, when can we be?' We're taking this as our cue to introduce as many ornaments as our heart's content – becasue it's the Richard E Grant way, after all.
