Rhys Carre has been left disappointed and perplexed by the reasons for his shock Wales axe.
The blockbusting Cardiff prop has been overlooked for the autumn campaign amid Wayne Pivac concerns over his conditioning, with Rhodri Jones, Nicky Smith and Gareth Thomas chosen instead.
According to Pivac, Carre has fallen short of conditioning requirements given to him ahead of the squad selection, telling the prop he has to start producing 60 minutes of high intensity rugby rather than fleeting eye-catching moments.
However, when asked about Pivac's comments Cardiff boss David Young offered a different interpretation.
"Well it wasn't accurate, that's the thing. It's nothing to do with conditioning. They gave him a weight target, which obviously he didn't make," said Young.
"They said that if he doesn't make a certain weight, then they won't pick him. That's what's happened. It's nothing to do with conditioning.
"They've given him a weight that they want him to get to to be able to play international rugby. He hasn't got to that weight so they haven't picked him."
Asked about Carre's reaction to his Wales axe, Young continued: "He's obviously disappointed. I don't think he actually agrees with the weight that they want him to get down to.
"But you've got to do what people tell you to do, really. If the boss tells you to do something, then unfortunately you have to do it whether you agree with it or not.
"All he can do is keep the performances up. As far as I'm concerned, I've been really pleased with the way he's played this season. In Wales, on occasions, we tend to spend too much time looking at what players can't do, instead of what they can do.
"I'm not sure how many loose-heads in Wales would have scored that try last week [against the Dragons]."
