Rhode Islanders who buy their own health insurance will see premiums rise an average of 12.4% in 2027, after the state's Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner (OHIC) approved final rates for 2027 health plans on September 29. Insurers had asked for an average of 20.1%. The decision affects about 50,700 people in the individual market.
The average does not tell any one household what it will pay. The final bill depends on the plan, the insurer, income, and whether a family qualifies for financial help. That help is changing too, because a new state program begins in January to replace part of the federal assistance that expired.
