Rhasidat Adeleke obliterates her own 200m National record

Rhasidat Adeleke obliterated her own 200m national record in Florida last night, running a blistering 22.34 at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational.

With the help of a 1.8m/s tailwind, the 20-year-old Tallaght AC star destroyed the record that she had only set at the end of January.

The track star is now well and truly the best 200m runner in Ireland's history. Her time set on Friday evening means she is now a whopping 0.65 seconds quicker over 200m than any other Irish woman ever.

It's another historic feat in what has already been a sensational season for the youngster, who twice smashed the Irish 400m record in the space of 21 days earlier this year.

Togging out for Texas University, Adeleke has been in sizzling form on the collegiate scene. She picked up a silver medal at the prestigious NCAA championship last month, and played a leading role as her university dominated the Texas Relays a couple of weeks ago.

Remarkably, Adeleke's new record was only good enough to secure a third-placed finish in what was a stacked field, with Texas University teammate Julien Alfred clocking a lightning-fast 21.91 with that same 1.8m/s tailwind.

Adeleke is back in action this afternoon in the 400m event, where she will go up against last month's NCAA winner Britton Wilson.
