RFS will face Hearts full of confidence on Thursday after a 4-0 win over Super Nova.
The Latvian Higher League outfit are at Tynecastle in midweek for the Jambos’ penultimate Europa Conference League Group A clash. Robbie Neilson’s side were 2-0 winners in Riga last month after a Lawrence Shankland penalty and Alan Forrest’s late strike gave them their only points of the campaign to date, having suffered heavy defeats against Istanbul Basaksehir and Fiorentina home and away.
The capital club retain slim hopes of finishing second, but need a favour in Florence. The Turkish outfit can secure their status as group winners if they leave Italy with all three points. The Jambos must also make it a double against RFS to set up a final game shoot-out for second place. They would then be relying on La Viola to drop points in Latvia and record an unlikely victory themselves in Istanbul.
A day after Hearts were edged out in a thrilling Premiership encounter against Celtic at Tynecastle, RFS cruised to victory on league duty. They scored four without reply in Salaspis to keep their slim title hopes alive with three games remaining.
Two goals in five minutes from Vitalijs Jogodinskis and Deniss Rakels had them two goals up before half-time. Andrej Ilic added a third with just under 15 minutes to play, then Alfusainey Jatta rounded off the scoring on 86 minutes.
The result leaves them seven points behind leaders Valmiera, who they play next Sunday after returning from Edinburgh.
