New York magazine announced on Thursday that its Washington correspondent, Olivia Nuzzi, is currently on leave after it was revealed she had allegedly been involved in a romantic relationship with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
A spokesperson for Kennedy, who launched a third-party presidential campaign and recently expressed support for Donald Trump, stated to Status following the release of this article that he refuted any claims of a romantic involvement with Nuzzi. "Mr. Kennedy only met Olivia Nuzzi once in his life for an interview she requested, which yielded a hit piece," the spokesperson said.
"Recently, Olivia Nuzzi informed the magazine's editors that she had engaged in a personal relationship with a former subject connected to the 2024 campaign while covering the campaign," a spokesperson for the magazine Status stated. "This was a breach of the magazine's policies regarding conflicts of interest and disclosure."
"Had the magazine been aware of this relationship, she would not have continued reporting on the presidential campaign", the spokesperson further explained.
"An internal review of her work found no inaccuracies or signs of bias. She is currently on leave, and the magazine is conducting a more comprehensive third-party review. We regret this breach of our readers' trust."
Nuzzi shared her own statement with Status after the story was published, confirming that "earlier this year, the nature of some communication" between herself "and a former reporting subject turned personal."
"During that time, I did not directly report on the subject nor use them as a source", she added.
"The relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of a conflict. I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I've disappointed, especially my colleagues at New York."
Olivia Nuzzi did not voluntarily inform New York magazine about her alleged relationship with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and the publication only recently became aware of it, sources told Status. According to someone close to Nuzzi, the relationship began after her November 2023 profile on Kennedy was published. Another individual familiar with the situation indicated that the relationship is thought to have started around the beginning of the new year.
