Revolution's Game of Thrones advent calendar is great but day 12 needs a re-think

You know the countdown to Christmas is truly ramping up when the beauty advent calendars start lining the shelves. If you're looking for something a bit different, and you're a fan of all things Westeros, then Revolution has just released a Game of Thrones 12-day make up calendar.

I recently reviewed the Game of Thrones x Revolution collection which contained a number of incredible items including a set of liquid lipsticks named after female characters and an Iron Throne beauty sponge holder.

Thankfully, if you've splurged on that collection already you can expect zero repeats in the advent calendar as all the items seem to be exclusives.

The calendar, which is currently priced at £40, comes in a box with individual packets for each day. A nice touch is that assembled it makes the Iron Throne so there's no confusing box number six and box number nine (a real pet peeve of mine).

While I was impressed with the content, both in their size and in their quality, my only gripe was with the order they came in.

I might be old fashioned but I think there should always be something special on the first and last day of an advent calendar. And while the Iron Throne mirror from day one was pretty cool, day 12 gives you primer. Primer! Even if the designer was thinking of the items in order of use why would primer be last?

There is also the fact that day 11 is fixing spray. Fixing spray and primer back-to-back is a bit anti-climatic for me.

Days four and five also both contain lipstick which, while less offensive than primer for the final day, still feels a tad unplanned. That said, the shades do make a nice ombre look together, so I'll let them off.

The contents in total amass to a mirror, a mini House Stark palette, a beauty blender, two lipsticks, a mascara, false eye lashes, a House Lannister palette, a liquid eyeshadow, a lip gloss, fixing spray and primer. And while post items are not full size I still think it's a pretty good haul for the money.

I tried a look using as many products as I could (basically all of them minus the eyelashes as I didn't have any glue to hand).

The primer went on nicely and had a faint smell of chocolate (is this the Christmas link I was missing at first glance?) Although never entirely convinced by the need for primer it did the job and my foundation - which I applied with the enclosed beauty sponge - looked nice over the top.

I really liked both palettes and while I think House Lannister is more fitting with the theme, House Stark had some very pretty colours. For my look I used the shade 'dark' from the Stark palette which was a deep purple, with the rusty shade 'family' from the Lannister palette. I went over the centre of the eyelid with the liquid eyeshadow which was a bronze metallic colour.

I used both lipsticks for my look but made the mistake of going over them with the gloss which I would describe more as a liquid lipstick. While it is shiny like a gloss, it isn't sheer and so my whole lip look just became a bold red lip (tis the season, I guess).

All in all a very solid advent calendar. I do think they missed a trick not giving the calendar the tagline 'Christmas is Coming', although I guess that takes away from the drama of it all.

If you fancy getting something for the make-up loving Westeros fan in your life but don't fancy spending £40 on an advent calendar, Revolution has also just released a Winter is Coming gift set that contains a cool toned eyeshadow palette, false eyelashes, a very shimmery lip gloss and fixing spray for £25.
