Revolution Electric Press in Leeds review: £300k Vodka-Land makeover looks slick but the food is underwhelming

The ever-busy Revolution site at Electric Press enjoyed a £300,000 renovation at the start of 2022.

It returned in January to much fanfare, coinciding with the venue’s 15th birthday, loudly and proudly proclaiming to be vodka-land. As part of its makeover, Revs, added an adult’s fairground area, ideal for selfies, new dining spaces, large sharing tables, a new heated courtyard and DJ booth as well as an open plan dancefloor complete with a new lighting show.

They also added over 20 cocktails to the menu but what of the food offering? We popped in for a quick bite ahead of taking on the football quiz at the newly-opened Golaccio - based nearby at Great George Street.

The food menu consists of indulgent staples such as nachos, ribs, burgers and pizzas amongst other eye-catching treats.

We were encouraged to order using the QR code although you also could just walk up to the bar. Doing the former meant downloading the Revolution app. Once our order was in we did wait more than you’d expect for our drinks, two beers and a sex on the beach cocktail, to arrive.

The bar didn’t seem overly busy and it felt like we’d have got them quicker just going to the bar. Waiting for our food to arrive gave an opportunity to take in the newly-refurbed surroundings and it looks like money well-spent with the new and improved Revs looks slick and welcoming.

Taking a mini-tour offers a reminder of just how big the establishment is…and just how far away the toilets are.

And, the adult fairground seemed to be having the desired effect as even on a moderately busy early Thursday evening there were people queuing up for selfies.

For food, we decided to get the sharing grazin’ deal which offered three sharing plates at a discounted rate of £13.50. The nibbles we went for included chicken wings, chicken skewers and calamari.

Given we had a quiz to get to we asked for them to come with our mains which they duly did - although my pizza did come along a few minutes later. The staff were perfectly apologetic about the delay but it did result in that awkward ‘no, honestly start your food’ moment with my dining chums.

Around the table, we ate the meaty pizza, which consisted of Pepperoni, meatballs, pulled chicken, bacon, onion, a beer ‘n’ BBQ burger and I eventually received a margherita pizza - arguably the ultimate test of whether a venue serves a good pizza or not.

It would be great to offer you a little more of a positive or negative assessment but, in general, the food was fine. It is unlikely to be something you’ll rave to your friends about but at the same time you’ll chow down next you’re after a bite in town.

It was very much Ronseal, the meal did exactly what you'd expect it to.

If we had time to hang about for dessert the Revs selection includes a chocolate brownie, pornstar cheesecake and salted caramel squares.

Personally, my favourite part of the experience was the cocktail which certainly had its fair share of cocktail in - although you’d expect nothing less from vodka-land.
