Revised Brabazon plans for up to 6,500 Bristol homes submitted

Revised plans have been submitted which could see thousands of more homes built as part of the vast Brabazon neighbourhood to the north of Bristol.

YTL Developments has submitted an updated masterplan for the project on the former Filton Airfield, which it forecasts could provide a £5bn boost to the local economy and support more than 30,000 jobs.

The Malaysia-based firm already has planning permission to transform the site into a community of 2,675 homes while it also has consent to turn the Brabazon Hangars – where every UK Concorde was built – into a 17,000 capacity arena.

Construction of the venue is expected to begin this year, while detailed proposals for a new train station and a 14-acre urban park are also being considered.

The fresh master plan, submitted to South Gloucestershire Council on Wednesday (April 6), includes a flexible framework to allow the potential maximum number of homes at Brabazon to increase in stages to 6,500.

YTL bosses said the new plans would ensure Brabozan becomes “a new urban destination that lives up to the legacy of the former Airfield’s pioneering past” - instead of the “suburban” nature of the currently approved vision.

Seb Loyn, planning and development director for YTL Developments added any additional homes would only come forward should there be a proportionate increase in the capacity and frequency of rail services, bus connections and cycle paths and walking routes.

Mr Loyn said: “Bristol and South Gloucestershire face a housing crisis and need to build more than 100,000 new homes within the next two decades.

“But it is not enough to just build homes: if we are to tackle the climate crisis, we need to make sure we build more sustainable homes in the right places.

“This means on brownfield land along existing transport corridors like at Brabazon, where public transport connections and active travel routes provide a genuine alternative to car-dependent lifestyles.

“Brabazon sits on major public transport corridors, including the M1 MetroBus route and Concorde Way cycle path. A train service from the new rail station being built at Brabazon will connect to Bristol Temple Meads in less than 15 minutes when operational in 2023.

“Nowhere in the West of England is better placed to build the new homes, offices, schools and community facilities we need, and to do so in a way that is environmentally and economically sustainable.”
