Revise merit list for 2020 clerks’ selection: Punjab and Haryana high court

CHANDIGARH: In a major setback to thousands of candidates selected for the post of clerk in Haryana through the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) in 2020, the Punjab and Haryana high court has directed the HSSC to revise the merit list. With this, around 4,800 clerks working in various departments of the state would be affected.

The order has been passed by the HC after observing discrepancies in the answers to the question paper conducted by the commission for the examination. The court also censured the chief examiner of the HSSC for such discrepancies.

Justice Arun Monga of the HC has passed these orders while hearing a bunch of petitions raising the issue of discrepancies in the question paper.

The order was pronounced in the open court but the detailed copy of the order was not available till the filing of this report.

In June 2019, the HSSC had advertised for selection on around 4,800 posts of clerks for various government departments in Haryana. The final result for the said posts was declared in September 2020.

The main contention of the petitioners, who had also appeared for the said examination, was that their answers in the examination were correct but the same was given wrong in the answer keys released by the HSSC.

According to the petitioners, due to the miscalculations of the commission, the petitioners could not find a place on the final cut-off list.

However, as per the proof available with the petitioners, the answers of the petitioners were correct and the answers of the HSSC were wrong, the HC was informed.

The counsel for the petitioners, advocate Ravinder Singh Dhull submitted that it was not the first time that the HSSC has adopted such a casual approach and callous attitude in publishing results even after objections are received.

On various other occasions, the candidates had to approach the court for wrong answers given by the commission and even the court had found the commission at fault.
