On the hottest day of the year so far, it seemed appropriate that there were flames outside San Carlo when I arrived but there was no need to call the emergency services. The Olympic-style gas burners at the front have been a Corn Street landmark for 26 years now and judging by the enduring popularity of this Italian restaurant, they’ll be burning for a lot longer than that.
This long-running Bristol restaurant has been blazing a trail with its upmarket Italian food since 1996 and it’s still busy. And when I say busy, I mean packed.
Had I not booked far in advance, I wouldn’t have got a table and several people were politely turned away during our meal. After almost three decades, Bristol diners still can’t get enough of the place.
