Review: Ishmael Ensemble has emotional return home and play sold-out crowd in Bristol

For a musician, nothing quite amounts to the nerves and excitement of playing in your hometown. Even after playing Glastonbury, the most famous music festival on the planet, Jazz Electronica collective Ishmael Ensemble was clearly moved by their homecoming show in Bristol last week.

Hailing mostly from Paulton and Midsomer Norton, Ishmael Ensemble has been based in Bristol for some time now. The band's lead, Pete Cunningham, spent much of his youth sneaking into Bristol clubs, which is certainly reflected in the band's sound today, blending classic elements of Nu Jazz infused with elements from Drum & Bass and Dub, true to the city's underground music scene.

The Bristol leg of their autumn tour at Trinity on November 10 marked an important homecoming performance for the collective, and Pete has previously promised a "proper celebration" of the band's achievements so far in an interview with BristolLive.
