Review: Bristol’s new vegan pasta restaurant Pastan

After Pastan opened its new Bristol restaurant along Prince Street on Tuesday night, I wanted to continue my Veganuary adventure and try their plant-based pasta dishes for myself. I was excited to taste the food as the pictures on their website just looked so good, but being a meat and dairy eater I was still apprehensive.

When I first saw the place from the outside, I thought it looked really cute and cosy but seemed a lot smaller than I was expecting. But the size of a restaurant doesn’t mean anything if they can cook some amazing food, as the likes of Tare, Squeezed and others have already proved in Bristol.

Inside I was really taken by how well the space inside had been used. The tables were mainly for two people, but with the possibility to be moved to accommodate larger groups. A small half-booth was situated at the back of the restaurant with a bench seat on one side and a few stools on the other.

Onto the food. When I say it was amazing, I mean it was some of the best food I have had out in a while, vegan or otherwise. Having spent a few minutes looking at the menu, I decided that I would have both a starter and a main course so went for the fresh pan toasted ‘butter’ bread and the Umami Stroganoff.

As it was lunchtime and they had only been open a couple of days, it wasn't too busy and the wait for my food wasn’t long at all. I went for a refreshing glass of lemonade to drink while I waited, and I tucked in straight away as soon as the food arrived.

The pasta was absolutely to die for - the texture was so smooth and it tasted absolutely gorgeous. This was my first time tasting plant-based pasta, but I couldn’t tell the difference really. For someone who has eaten meat and dairy diet their whole life, I honestly couldn’t believe how good it all tasted and the stroganoff was just as good as any meat version I've had.

For lunch during Veganuary, the restaurant is running a great deal allowing customers to get any pasta main for £10, which is an absolute bargain for the food you get. I would definitely recommend it and would love to go back to see how the rest of their menu compares.
