It's no secret that St Helens have ruled the roost over Super League for the past three years. But an old foe is threatening to become a force once more. Wigan Warriors have been revitalised under Matt Peet, with their new head coach bringing the good times back to the DW Stadium.
That was evident as they won the Challenge Cup Final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last week. Not only was it Peet's first final, it was a major trophy at the earliest possible attempt.
Of course, it isn't lost on Wigan fans, or Saints for that matter, that the Warriors toppled the Super League champions on their way, killing off their hopes of another domestic double, or dominance, in the semi-final.
The two sides will face each other outside of the northwest once more, as Super League descends on St James’ Park in Newcastle in July. This will be the second time the sides have met in the league too, with Saints running out 22-4 winners over the Warriors during an electric Good Friday showdown.
With one win each, a close battle on the Toon appears inevitable as both sides compete at the top end of the Super League, with the League Leaders' Shield truly in the balance.
Saints, unsurprisingly are leading the pack this season, having only lost two league games. However, the Warriors sit only four points behind them after an impressive start to life under Peet. Wigan look to be the side who will challenge Saints and Catalans at the top of the table, and this will be the perfect game for them to prove their point.
With the whole of Super Leagues eyes on the side in cherry and white, a win at the Magic Weekend would make a huge statement. It could even propel them above Saints, depending on results in the next few weeks. They won’t have it all their own way however, after Saints were knocked out of the Challenge Cup, they will be even more determined to dish out some revenge.
It will prove to be a fierce psychological battle, after Saints were comfortable winners first time around, Wigan bounced back to beat them at Elland Road. Who will be able to put that to the back of their minds this time around? This game will be a real indicator of how the two sides will progress this season, with it being a showpiece game between two of the real challengers.
This is the first time the two sides have met at the Magic Weekend since 2012, meaning Super League fans are set for a treat this year. As St Helens take on Wigan and Hull FC face Hull KR, we could be set for one of the best Magic Weekend’s to date.
