(Picture: PA Archive)Tower Hamlets has the highest percentage of energy efficient homes in the country, a new analysis reveals.
New research shows the the east London borough has the highest percentage of homes with energy performance ratings of C or above.
Energy Performance Certificates give properties a rating between A and G to give prospective buyers or renters an indication of how much it would cost to heat and power their home, with A being the most efficient and G the least.
Analysis from energy experts BOXT has found that 73 per cent of properties in Tower Hamlets have energy performance ratings of C or above, the highest of any local authority in the country. This is 33 per cent higher than the national average and 10 per cent higher than the City of London, which sits in second place.
Hackney, Southwark and Greenwich also feature in the top 10 boroughs for highest energy efficiency with 58, 57 and 55 per cent of properties respectively having an energy performance rating of C or above.
The findings mirror those of Trust for London, which earlier this year found that properties in outer London were more likely to have poor energy efficiency ratings compared with inner London.
Homes in Kingston-upon-Thames and Richmond-upon-Thames were found to have the lowest energy efficiency, with an average rating of low Band D.
According to Trust for London, homes in outer London were more likely to have worse energy efficiency as properties are older and therefore less likely to be as well insulated as properties in more densely built “new build heavy” inner London boroughs.
Things such as better insulation for lofts and walls, double or triple glazed windows and heat pumps can all contribute to a more energy efficient home.
The new analysis from BOXT comes just one month before the energy price cap is set to be raised, with the average annual household energy bill set to increase to £3,549.
