Returning Celtic legend labelled 'incredible' amid remarkable season turnaround

Former defender Jackie McNamara has highlighted the scale of Celtic’s injury problems last season, praising Martin O’Neill for guiding the team through them en route to a domestic double.

Despite poor form at certain points of the season, the Scottish Premiership champions were without important players at key moments during the season, which hampered their side.

Now, following the expected return of O'Neill this summer, his former player has heaped praise on the 74-year-old.

“I don’t think it was talked about enough, the amount of players Celtic missed,” McNamara said. “Starting with the goalkeeper situation with Kasper Schmeichel, Cameron Carter-Vickers was a massive one, and Jota too. [Daily Record]

“They’ve also struggled in the striking area. Even the ones brought in during January have been injured or not playing. The fact Martin has managed to navigate through important games, while also playing in Europe, is incredible.

“He’s had to manage Kelechi Iheanacho, bringing him in at certain points because you can’t start him as he won’t last 90 minutes.

"You’ve got to give him immense credit.”
