PALM BAY, Fla. - A tragic incident unfolded in Palm Bay, Florida on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of four people, including a retired priest and a man suspected of wounding two police officers during a confrontation at a family birthday party. The shocking turn of events left the community in mourning and investigators searching for answers.

The incident began when Brandon Kapas, 24, became involved in a disturbance at his family's residence in Palm Bay. Police were called to the scene, and a confrontation ensued. In the midst of the altercation, Kapas opened fire, injuring two police officers in an attempt to flee the scene. Additional law enforcement officers quickly responded to the emergency, and in the ensuing chaos, Kapas fatally shot his grandfather, William Kapas, who had tried to intervene on behalf of the officers.

The situation escalated further as officers were forced to use lethal force, resulting in the death of Brandon Kapas. Police found what they described as an 'arsenal' of several rifles and handguns in a vehicle that Kapas had been driving, adding to the perplexing nature of the incident. The motive behind Kapas's actions and the reason for his possession of such an extensive collection of weapons remain unknown at this time.

Despite the tragedy that unfolded, the Palm Bay Police Department lauded the heroic actions of their officers, who managed to prevent an even greater catastrophe from occurring. Chief Mariano Augello expressed relief that more lives were not lost during the distressing situation.

In a chilling twist, investigators discovered two additional victims, a retired priest and his sister, at their home. Robert Hoeffner, a retired priest associated with the St. Joseph Catholic Community, and his sister Sally Hoeffner were found dead, leading authorities to believe that they were killed before Kapas went to his grandfather's home for the ill-fated birthday party. The nature of the connection between Kapas and his victims remains under investigation by Palm Bay detectives.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct an inquiry into the officer-involved shooting, ensuring a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the events leading to this tragic loss of life.

Palm Bay, a city located about 75 miles southeast of Orlando, now confronts the aftermath of this senseless violence. The community mourns the loss of four lives and grapples with questions surrounding the motives and circumstances that led to such a devastating event. As investigators work diligently to unravel the complexities of this incident, the city of Palm Bay seeks solace and strength in coming together to support the affected families and console one another during this trying time.
