A retail worker has been seriously injured in a stabbing as he tried to stop a robbery at David Jones’ flagship store in Melbourne.
The male Saint Laurent staff member apparently confronted a man and woman who allegedly stole a designer handbag from the David Jones on Little Bourke Street, in the Melbourne CBD, just before midday on Tuesday.
The male offender allegedly stabbed the worker in the arm before he and the woman fled the scene.
Victoria Police said the worker was in a serious condition.
“A male staff member confronted a man and woman who stole a designer handbag from a Little Bourke Street department store shortly before 12pm,” they said in a statement.
“The male thief stabbed the staff member in the arm before fleeing with his accomplice.
“The staff member was taken to hospital with serious injuries.”
David Jones said the safety of its workers and customers was paramount.
“Our thoughts are with the team member and we are assisting police with their investigation into this incident,” it said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.
“Across the country retailers are seeing increasing incidents of theft and violence towards workers.
“This is completely unacceptable, and we continue to partner with the police and have taken appropriate measures with security across our store network.”
