New Delhi: India's consumer price index (CPI)-based retail inflation rose to 5.49% in September from 3.65 in August amid surging food prices.
In prevous two months, retail inflation stood at 3.65% in August 2024 and 3.54% in July 2024. The-CPI based inflation was 5.02 per cent in September.

Food inflation
As per data released by Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on Monday, food inflation rose to 9.24% in September this year from 5.66% in the previous month.
Meanwhile, rural areas saw food inflation of 9.08%, while urban areas registered an even sharper increase at 9.56%.

RBI Governor
While announcing the monetary policy last week, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das had said that CPI print for the month of September could witness a big jump owing to to unfavourable base effects and pick up in food price momentum, caused by the lingering effects of a shortfall in the production of onion, potato and chana dal (gram) in 2023-24, among other factors.
