One of the reasons the Tories hesitated in moving against Boris Johnson earlier is that they feared there was no obvious successor. It is ironic that it has taken the resignation of more than 30 Ministers to prove the paucity of talent hidden in Johnson’s government.
Has anyone heard of the nobodies who have walked out of their well-padded Ministerial offices without leaving behind any discernible trace of having improved or changed the country for the better? Rishi Sunak, the politically impoverished billionaire former chancellor, has been replaced by an almost equally wealthy Nadhim Zahawi.
What’s a few million quid of difference between chancellors who will never have a feel for the inflation-laden challenges facing low-earners? The resignation statement of Health Secretary Sajid Javid may have carried emotional weight – because he knows he is unlikely to reach high office again – but it did not have the political punch to knock out the Prime Minister.
He was no Sir Geoffrey Howe, whose resignation statement caused the downfall of Margaret Thatcher. The supine Cabinet that surrounded Johnson was incapable of finding the collective spine to remove this charlatan from Downing Street earlier.
It was only when the sewage of sexual scandal threatened to overwhelm their majorities that they found reason to move. Even then they appear to be an uncoordinated rabble ready to fight a pitched battle among themselves while the “greased piglet” makes his escape.
The decline in quality of top-shelf politicians may be regrettable but that will not cause us any regret for the inevitable departure of Johnson. The sooner we see his entire “lightweight brigade” gone the better for everyone.
Maybe then some trust in politics can be restored and the nation can begin to recover from the damage caused by Johnson and his dreadful government.
